 Historic and Cultural Resources

Federal regulations pertaining to the protection of historic properties, referred to as the Section 106 process, require the NJDOT to take into account the effect of proposed projects upon historic resources listed in, or eligible for listing in, the National Register of Historic Places. NJDOT is required to solicit public input to assist it in carrying out the Section 106 process. The Section 106 process promotes an ongoing, public partnership through early and continuous involvement with consulting parties.

The NJDOT strives to balance the public need for safe and effective transportation routes while considering effects to historic properties. If you would like more detailed information on your role as part of the Section 106 process, please reference the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation’s A Citizen’s Guide to Section 106 Review, available online at https://www.achp.gov/sites/default/files/documents/2017-01/CitizenGuide.pdf.

Historic preservation organizations, historical societies, and similar groups, or individuals with information about cultural resources (archaeological or architectural) in the project area are encouraged to attend the Public Information Center or submit comments.
