Welcome to the Sixth Avenue Bridge Replacement Project

The County of Passaic is to replace the Sixth Avenue Bridge (Structure No. 1600-012) over the Passaic River in order to provide a safe and efficient crossing for all modes of transportation.  The bridge was originally constructed in 1900 as a four-span structure supported on stone masonry piers and abutments. In 1987, repairs were made, and the superstructure was replaced with temporary Acrow panel trusses with an open steel grid deck. This current bridge has structural and functional limitations that do not meet today’s design standards and transportation needs. As an essential connection for residents and businesses, the City of Paterson, Borough of Prospect Park, Borough of Hawthorne, and Passaic County of Board of Commissioners passed resolutions of support for replacement of the bridge.

Passaic County in coordination with NJTPA and NJDOT,  completed the Local Concept Development (LCD) Study and has advanced the project to the Local Preliminary Engineering (LPE) phase. The project will subsequently progress to Final Design (FD) and Construction phases using federal funding. Each phase requires approximately 18-24 months to complete.

Community involvement is an important part of this bridge project, and we encourage the community and general public to participate and provide input during the LPE Phase. The Project Team encourages the community and general public to follow and provide input during the LPE and future phases via this website.
